Sure Grip Bands

For some, wearing alternative hair is a necessity; their norm as been altered by either prescription medicine, stress, trauma, genetics, or disease.  Many never know why they lose their hair, it just happens, and they accept it.  Others wear alternative hair as a fashion statement.  Whatever has brought them to this place, alternative hair wearers share a common goal…that is to feel confident and comfortable in their wig or hairpiece.  It’s something that ALL of us that wear alternative hair must feel if we are to get through it and/or love it.  Which is why for the past three weeks I have maintained a focus on how to keep alternative hair securely in place.  Attachments, adhesives, and hair containment play an awesome role in us achieving that goal!  Today, I share with you yet another and the final tool offered in the Jon Renau line that will help bring you comfort and keep your wig right where you want it!

The Sure Grip Band.

If the other options you saw in our recent blog posts didn’t resonate with you, perhaps this one will.

Do you experience pressure headaches while wearing your wig?  Do you have a sensitive scalp?  While anyone can reap a benefit or two from this band, it’s prominent features make this gripper a winner for those experiencing total hair loss!  Unlike everything else I mentioned in previous posts, this product’s main focus is on comfort and it’s gel band delivers! It creates a cooling and comfortable barrier to protect and prevent against headaches caused by pressure as well as pressure point sores.  Finally and as the name indicates, the silicone band easily grips the skin as well as the wig keeping it securely in place.

Have questions about adhesives, attachments, tapes, or the Sure Grip Band?

As always, Beyond Basics Beauty Supply wants you to be confident and pleased with your investment.    Our informative blog will support you with product information. Wearing Wigs – What do I do with my Natural Hair?

I’m often asked, “What do I do with my natural hair when I put on my wig?”

When I first started wearing alternative hair my natural hair was pixie short and the nylon cap was ideal to hold back and keep in what little I had.  But now that my natural hair is longer, the fishnet liner has become my “cap” of choice.  Let’s look at these two styles and see how they differentiate from one another.

WIG CAPS

The Nylon Wig Cap

The Nylon Wig Cap is perfect for those with short hair or total hair loss.  They are comfortable, providing a cushion between the head and the cap.   A slightly denser band of nylon is located at the perimeter and provides a minimal but snugger fit than the rest of the cap.  Simply place over the head and tuck any existing natural hair inside the cap.

Some feel that nylon caps trap the heat radiating from the scalp thus making them feel as though wigs themselves are too hot when really they may just need to change the method of natural hair containment.  If this is the case for you, you may prefer a fishnet liner.

The Fishnet Wig Liner

The Fish Net Wig Liner is suitable for those with longer natural hair.  It provides outstanding breathability!

Simply place over the head and aligned near the hair line, tucking any existing natural hair inside the liner.  This liner is an outstanding option if you find the nylon caps lose their elasticity too quickly.  The liner has a reinforced elastic band at the perimeter.

Wig caps/liners have more than one use.  While they do keep hair confined to under the cap, they also give the wig something to grip, especially if your natural hair is fine and smooth like mine.  When deciding on a method to secure your natural hair, consider these three things:

  • length of hair
  • comfort of the cap/liner
  • security the cap/liner gives you (Are you confident in it’s ability to keep your hair contained and/or stay in place?)

Both the caps and the liners come in the following colors: black, brown, and beige.  Keep in mind that as you wear these caps they will lose their elasticity.  You can revive them by washing and placing inside a dryer for a few moments.  For this reason, you will want to have more than one cap or liner on hand.

As always, Beyond Basics Beauty Supply wants you to be confident and pleased with your investment. This doesn’t just happen on it’s own and the longevity of your alternative hair will be determined by how you care for it.  Our informative blog will support you with product information and teach you how to care for your wig or hairpiece.  Since this is a work in progress we encourage you to reach out to us at anytime.  This can be accomplished in many ways:

Part 2: Adhesives, Attachments, and Removers

Check out this helpful chart by Jon Renau for Adhesives, Attachments, and Removers.

By using this chart you can easily distinguish which adhesive(s) or attachment(s) will best meet your need(s) according to the Wig or Topper you wear.  Unlike last week’s post, where we mainly talked about securing your Wig, those of you that wear Toppers will find the chart below to be also, quite a treat!  Toppers always come with clips attached to them.  However, their placement may not be ideal for you if you experience periodic shedding, increased thinning, or permanent loss at or near the area where the clip(s) must have significant hair to securely attach too.

Consider these alternatives:

  • adding more (they are a cinch to sew in!)
  • moving them to a different location
  • removing them and adding tape for a more secure fit.

All of these products can be found under our Jon Renau Products/Accessories/Attachments tabs or here.

If you have a concern or question about any of the items listed above, email me: patty@beyondbasicsbeautysupply.com

If you missed last week’s post, find it here, Part 1 Adhesives & Attachments: Could My Wig Blow Off?

Part 1 Adhesives & Attachments: Could My Wig Blow Off?

The Answer is Yes!

While I have never had this happen, it is a thought that has crossed my mind a time or two when a particularly strong breeze gusted around me.  However, in the last few months two people have contacted me to share their stories of it happening to them.  Now thankfully, these ladies laughed as they told me about their situations, but for some, this could be crushing.  In order to keep this from happening to you, I wanted to share some techniques that you can use to keep your wig firmly in place.   There is only one reason a wig might get blown off your head, it’s too loose… So why is it happening and how can we prevent it?

For various reasons, some people experience nerve sensitivity to the scalp and wearing a wig can exacerbate this.  One of the ways they alleviate the pressure is by loosening the velcro straps inside the cap, too much.

Besides choosing to wear the cap loosely, another reason for a cap being too loose is that it has seen it’s last day….days ago.  We love the style and we hate to see it go…but if your wig has lost it’s elasticity and it’s literally just resting on top of your head…the time has come to bid it adieu and make way for a fresh update.  It has served you well!

Finally, a wig can be loose because it is too large for your head.  While wigs are sold in Petite, Average, and Large… the styles for Petite and Large are limited, and something someone new to wearing wigs may not know or learn about for quite some time.  Regardless of the size you have…if your new purchase is too large, your wig can be sized to fit (many boutiques offer this service for a small fee).  In conclusion, let’s look at some techniques that when used correctly, will keep your wig securely on your head where it’s meant to be!

Lace Front Wigs

If you wear lace fronts, try applying some tape for a more secure fit.  We carry three styles of tape for Lace Front Wigs.  The Jon Reanu tapes are color coded.  You will always be able to recognize tapes for Lace Fronts, they are blue.

We recommend using Lace Let Go to safely and effectively release the bond of the adhesive to your skin and remove the adhesive from the lace front.  Please enjoy this video on proper application and removal of tape on Lace Front Wigs.

Another option is to sew Pressure Sensitive Clips (Toupee Clips) into the inside – outer perimeter of your wig cap.  Keep in mind that you must have enough natural hair for the clips to securely attach to in order to use this option.

Mono Top Wig with a Polyurethane Perimeter

If your wig has a Mono Top with a Polyurethane (PU) Perimeter, there are special tapes for this material as well.  Tapes for Polyurethane will appear clear, brown, and red in color.  It is important to note that just because you wear a Mono Top wig doesn’t mean you can use tape.  You must have little to no hair in the areas you would need to apply tape and those areas must agree with where the poly-perimeter rests on your scalp in order for this application process to work best for you.  Otherwise, Tape and Go Clips will be your next best option.

Tape and Go clips are an excellent choice for MonoTops with the PU perimeter.  Again, keep in mind that you must have enough natural hair for the clips to securely attach to in order to use this option.

All tapes can be located here.

All clips can be located here.

Next Week:  We are talking more specifically about Adhesives, Attachments, and Removers.  We will answer questions such as:

  • How to apply adhesives and attachments?
  • Which one is best for me?
  • How long do they last?
  • Where do I apply them?
  • How do I remove them?

Cap Construction & What it Means to You

Cap Construction may be more important to you than the style of your wig!

Whether shopping in an alternative hair boutique or online, the first thing most people notice and look for is style.  Many THINK that is the most important aspect of their purchase and it certainly is important!  However, I would suggest, as an everyday hair wearer, that cap construction is most important to the one who wears their hair all day AND wears the same wig day in and day out.  Why? The majority of the people that enter our boutique are not shopping for alternative hair for fun, they are here out of necessity.  They may have tender scalps due to treatments and they have never worn alternative hair before; they are here to buy one wig and it needs to be convincing and comfortable!

On the other hand, if you buy hair as a fashion accessory, style is generally the main attraction.  You may still gravitate to a certain cap construction however, such as lace fronts for that off the face style-ability or Monofilament tops for part placement options.

There are many brands on the market and you should know that cap construction varies as do the styles from brand to brand.  If you have been turned off by wigs because you tried one that was uncomfortable and itchy, I urge you to try our line of Jon Renau Wigs.  I have worn each cap design and there has not been one that I couldn’t wear, but I’ve certainly narrowed it down to having a favorite or two!  When I’m looking for something I intend to wear often, I literally shop for styles within a cap construction group, comfort is that important to me!

We are all different and our differences make us unique and so it is with each one of Jon Renau’s cap designs.  Wig wearers have various needs and Jon Renau has anticipated this, keeping you in mind.  While many of the designs showcase similar attributes, each boasts a prominent feature or two that sets it apart from the others.  Understanding yourself and what you expect from your wig will set you up for a more enjoyable and comfortable experience.

Anticipate & Enjoy

Do you get hot flashes? Choose a cap design which features ventilation, is lightweight, and scalp cooling.  Do you enjoy big hair?  Choose a design that offers volume in the crown.  Do you want the most believable style?  Choose French drawn, hand tied, lace front, and or monofilment designs.  Let’s look at each more in depth and bring you closer to discovering and deciding on what cap design works best for you and your lifestyle.

What Does it Mean to You?

Jon Renau’s 2018 Spring release consisted of three beautiful wigs.  Two weeks ago we showcased the first of the collection, Gigi.  Gigi, Felicity, and Minka were all designed with Smartlace fronts and Single Monofilament tops.  This means a lot to the alternative hair wearer that looks for realism and natural movement mainly through the front and top of their wig.  This cap design delivers as promised allowing for off the face style-ability and flexibility in part placement.  In addition to these attributes, the mono part gives those looking for a little less volume just what they want when compared to other cap designs that actually create it.

Want to see Felicity’s movement in real time?  Please enjoy this video.

Topper Spotlight ~ easiPart HD 8″

easiPart HD 8″

Meet Jon Renau’s newest one-piece volumizer.   It clips in quickly for all-day comfort, adds instant thickness and body, and it can be styled with thermal tools.  Shown above in color Shaded Praline (12FS8), it’s a lovely light gold brown with a light natural gold blonde & pale natural gold-blonde blend, and is shaded with a medium brown root.  The new 8″ length is a long-awaited and welcome addition to the easiPart family and is perfect for those with shorter styles.

Specification

Collection: easiPart

Application Method: Clip In

Hair Type: Heat Defiant Synthetic

Base Dimensions: 2.75″ x 5″

Base Construction: Single Monofilament with a Polyurethane Perimeter

Length Availability: 8, 12, and 18″

What Does This Mean to You?

The Heat Defiant (HD) synthetic fibers give you a more natural look and a smoother feel, much like human hair but without the investment.  The base dimensions provide ample coverage to a thinning part line, while the various lengths (8, 12, and 18″) allow the wearer a smooth transition and the ability to grow their hair longer while maintaining their secret.  easiPart’s single monofilament top gives flexibility to each hair, allowing the part to be placed at any location.  The polyurethane perimeter also gives you the option of using tape if there is not enough hair for a clip to securely attach to.  Finally, you’ll be happy to know you have options!  easiPart HD 8″ comes in 29 natural, blended, and/or shaded (rooted) colors

Proper placement

Jon Renau suggests placing the topper 1-2″ behind the hairline.  However, should the wearer apply tape to the PU perimeter near the fringe area, the piece would then be placed at the natural hairline.

Not convinced that the easiPart HD 8″ base will give you the volume or coverage you desire?  Check out easiPart XL HD 8″

Remember, Heat Defiant Fibers are the most delicate of all Alternative Hair Fibers and require extra care to ensure their longevity.  It is recommended that digital thermal tools be used since applied heat should not exceed 350 degrees. To keep HD fibers looking their best, follow the care instructions included with your new purchase or view best cleansing and care practices for Heat Defiant Fibers here.

Do you prefer off the face styling?  Are you anxious when the wind blows up the front of your wig?  Then you will love the lace front as it mimics hair growth from the scalp, creating a beautiful and believable hairline.

Do you prefer to part your hair on a certain side, down the center, or do you like to change it up?  Wearing a style that boasts a monofilament top means there is no commitment!  The design itself allows for flexible fiber movement, giving you the versatility to style as you wish.  For those of you looking for less volume in the top and crown, the hand – tied hairs lay more naturally and appear less dense than caps that feature a wefted top.  Furthermore, those with little or no hair growth on top of the scalp will find this cap construction a very comfortable option.
